The Wasps Trust

The Wasps Trust was formed in late 1993 as a charitable body aiming to buy and develop property for arts use. The Trust works principally with Wasps Artists' Studios (Wasps Ltd) to provide secure workspace for the benefit of current and future generations of artists and the wider Scottish public. There are currently 5 trustees drawn from the property professions.

The Trust completed its first acquisition in April 1995, with the purchase of Wasps Ltd's Dovehill Studios in East Campbell Street in Glasgow with capital grant support from The Foundation for Sport and The Arts and The Glasgow Development Agency. A second property at Alexandra Parade, Glasgow - Wasps Ltd's largest - was purchased in 1997 with assistance from The Scottish Arts Council's Capital Lottery Fund, allowing the Trust to initiate a £2.2 million redevelopment of the property in 2000-2001.

More than £10 million in private and public sector capital funds has been raised to date towards the Trust's investment programme. The Trust currently owns six studio buildings in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Irvine and Fife, and is leading the £6.5 million renovation of the Grade A listed Briggait in Glasgow's Merchant City.

Objectives

  • To purchase and upgrade properties for arts use in Scotland, particularly facilities for visual artists.
  • To strengthen, improve and develop the quality and range of facilities available to visual artists in existing studio buildings.
  • To expand the infrastructural base for visual artists by establishing studio complexes in communities in which facilities are currently not provided or are under-developed.
  • To promote the retention of visual artists within the Scottish communities in which they choose to live and work.
  • To enhance the accessibility and availability of visual art to the public at a local level
