About
I spent my final year of university studying the old town of Edinburgh which ignited an interest in city grain and, in particular, cityscape and skyline. This was something I sought to investigate further on my RSA scholarship to Florence in 2009. Medieval Florence, that of Dante, was littered with 150 towers, of which I could find very little drawn evidence, and so was impelled to draw it. Since returning from Italy, I have maintained this interest and have spent my free time drawing by hand. Although architecture is my career path, I believe the distinction between art and architecture is blurred, and that the drawing of architecture is fast becoming a lost art.
I have a passionate enthusiasm for history. I am most inspired by old maps and city panoramas, in particular Buonsignori’s 1584 map of Florence, those by Piranesi, and etchings by Durer. I think the depiction of detail and hatching used by the masters is beautiful and this is something I seek to incorporate in my drawing style.
