About
Dusseldorf based artist Cornelius Quabeck was selected to come to Glasgow for this years Wasps/Anna Lobner exchange. Our panel initially selected Cornelius as we felt that the aesthetic within his work was very unique and we were intrigued to see how it would develop in Glasgow.
Cornelius Quabeck was born in Wuppertal, Germany in 1974 and graduated from Chelsea College of Art and Design in 2000 with an MFA. Since then his career has progressed rapidly. Cornelius has had numerous solo exhibitions across Europe and is represented by the Steven Friedman Gallery in London, Galerie Horst Schuler in Dusseldorf and Galerie Martin van Zomeren in Amsterdam. Currently resideing in Dusseldorf he has spent the past two years exploring a new formal trajectory within his work as illustrated by the accompanying images. Cornelius worked in Hanson Street during October and November 2011.
On being selected for the exchange, Cornelius states: "I applied for the Anna Lobner exchange as I really wanted the opportunity to spend time and work as an artist in Glasgow. I beleive that Scotland's biggest city has been of major importance to Europe and its vibrant art scene has played an important role in the art world."
"Neither abstract or wholly figurative, Cornelius' works combine explosive tonal planes with fractured depictions of flora and fauna. Overlapping layers of paint bleed into one another and saturate the surface of the canvas. A kaleidoscopic fusion of colour and tone ensues. From the depths of this chaotic mixture of turquoise blues and ocean-like greens, reds and yellows, the faint markings of tangible forms appear. Fragmented brush strokes suggest the outline of a fruit tree, the impression of a paintbrush, or the hint of a wild beast." Alice Walters 2010.
Cornelius celebrates painting and offers a glimpse of the mediums future. Whilst in Glasgow, he is based in our Dennistoun Studios in Glasgow and we hope to exhibit the outcomes of his residency next year.
