About
I design and make contemporary woven textiles in my studio at the Briggait in Glasgow. I love sailing, rock climbing and windsurfing and source unusual sports-related materials to experiment with- climbing ropes, sail material, neoprene- alongside more traditional yarns such as wool and silk to create textiles which are both decorative and functional. I also look to the traditional textiles I’ve grown up with or gathered on my travels- Scottish tweeds, Welsh blankets, Mayan Backstrap weaving- as they are such a wealth of cultural, historical and technical inspiration. I love neon colours, 3-dimensional structures and have a bit of an obsession with ropes.
I originally studied Textile Design at Glasgow School of Art (BA Honours, First Class, 2003) and went on to study an MA at the Royal College of Art (2006). I have worked in several weaving mills, exhibited internationally, gained business funding from NESTAs Starter for 6 programme and the Scottish Arts Council Crafts Start Up Award and won awards for colour, innovation and design- shortlisted as ‘Most Promising New Designer’ in the Blueprint magazine awards at 100% Design (September 2009).
