Project Spaces

Aberdeen

This street-front, city centre project space is currently home to an exciting new initiative that has already given up to 12 emerging artists, including MFA and undergraduate students, the chance to create and exhibit new work in Aberdeen.

The project is a three-way partnership between Wasps Studios, Gray’s School of Art & Project Slogan which aims to:

• Develop cultural leadership in emerging artists by fostering a ‘Do-It-Yourself’ mentality
• Provide a new city centre space for promising artists to create, experiment and exhibit new work
• Create regular art openings and arts-led events to encourage a more vibrant arts scene and help to retain  emerging talent in the city
• Develop arts audiences by exhibiting the work of local contemporary artists in a prominent city centre  location
• Allow artists to take responsibility for an event in a professional atmosphere
• Provide Professional Development advice for students about integrating into ‘life after art school’ through  opportunities and networking. This builds on current initiatives within Gray’s School of Art

The year’s programme has been split into quarters with 4 distinct projects: a residency and show by an outstanding graduate of Gray’s school of art; 5 fortnightly residencies for undergraduate students with shows and events; a residency for a promising artist to experiment working with new materials and a public display of their work and a series of events and exhibitions led by Project Slogan.

Artists have applied to use the space and a panel led by Project Slogan with representatives from Wasps and Gray’s helped to make selection. Each artist receives a bursary to make new work, mentoring support and advice from Project Slogan, and experience in curating and organising exhibitions and events.

We are delighted to report that we have secured funding to continue to run the space until end March 2010. If you are a student or graduate based in Aberdeen that would be interested in showing work in this space or possibly volunteering some time and gaining some gallery experience, please contact Sarah Tingle of Project Slogan.

Our thanks go to Aberdeen City Council, Gray's School of Art and Ambience Interiors for part-funding this initiative.

Glasgow

We are now welcoming proposals from individuals and groups to exhibit in the Hanson Street project space in Dennistoun, east of the city centre.  The Hanson Street project space is 4,000 sq ft of exhibition space which you encounter on entering the studio building. As the building  also houses 77 studio spaces, two open access workshops, the Wasps head office and a cafe, the space has a massive potential to reach different kinds of audiences.

The café sits within the project space and access to studios runs directly off the area. It is therefore not a conventional “white box” gallery space as people enter the space to use the café and also to walk through to gain access to the studios. This is one of the positive aspects to the space as it means an audience is always guaranteed. There is also a box like construction in the centre of the space which can be used as a projection/screening area.

If you would be interested in showing your work/curating a show in the Hanson Street project space, please read our application guidelines.
