Wasps/Culture and Sport Glasgow: Dusseldorf Residency 2009 - Artists Announced
Wednesday 20, May 2009
Our exciting exchange programme between Glasgow and Dusseldorf continues and this year installation artist Kirsten Kruger will be coming to live and work in our Hanson Street studios for the months of August and September 2009.
Kirsten Kruger says of her work:
“My Sculptures address images and atmospheres derived from the collective human basic vocabulary. The emotional aspect of sculpture and its immediate tangible quality as a bodily presence is used in order to evoke specific associations, opening new vistas for the observer’s imagination.”
Kirsten hopes that her stay in Glasgow will lead to a productive exchange with the resident artists and the public and is looking forward to opening her practice to new contacts and networks.
Congratulations also to Glasgow based artist Tian Miller who will take up residency in Dusseldorf at the same time. Tian will stay in a complex of artists live/work spaces in the “Bilk” district of the city – close to the centre. Her studio will be just above the Kunstraum which is where she will exhibit her work at the end of her stay.
Tian uses found materials such as printed fabrics, old wallpaper retrieved from derelict buildings, and garments passed on from relatives onto which she screen prints images of her own design. The effect created is an uneasy marriage of the two images contrasting the highly stylized, decorative, found patterned fabrics with appropriated technical scientific drawings and Victorian style silhouettes.
We, alongside Culture and Sport Glasgow who have supported this residency are certain that both artists will have a fantastic experience in each city.
