Parabolas Del Agua - An Exhibition of Contemporary Cuban Art

Last month, five Cuban artists arrived in Glasgow for a residency and exhibition opoortunity. Their exhbition, Parabolas Del Agua will run until 14th August.
This project has been organised by Tengo Frio, a group of Students at Glasgow School of Art and Goldsmiths in London. The Directors of Tengo Frio, Maria Paz Gardiazabal and Florrie James, have organised the exhibition in response to their exchange at the artschool in Havana.
The exhibition, Parabolas Del Agua is the first exhibition and artists reseidency of Cuban artists to take place in Glasgow. It has been funded but ehthe Glasgow City Council Twinning Departmentand reinforces old links between the two cities and celebrates our shared heritage. the project has also been awarded money from the Henry Moore Foundation.
The artists Lester Alvarez Meno, Elizabeth Cervino and Jose Eduardo Yaque work with mixed media, making paintings, sculptures, installations and film. As Alvarez Meno says, their work focusses on the pretentious interest of men in nature and the ultimate indifference of the latter to express their situation as Cuban artists.
The exhibition will open a new conversation about making art within the two cultures of Cuba and Scotland. As well as capturing the distinct energy of the artists in Glasgow, Tengo Frio hope to strengthen the infrastructure of contemporary visual art in Havana. It is Tengo Frio's aim to provide a free space for these artists to exhibit their work outside of commercial and governmental constraints.
There will be artists talks and open studios at Glasgow School of art to accompany this two week exhibition. Through these events we can start discussions about what it is to be an artist in Cuba.

Wasps/PPG New Graduate Prize 2010

Now in its fourth year, the Wasps/PPG New Graduate Prize is quickly being recognized as hugely beneficial award, supporting new graduates with free studio space when they need it most.
This award allows us to offer a free studio for a year to graduates from Glasgow School of Art, Edinburgh College of Art and Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee.
All the shortlisted artists that we met presented fascinating work to us and it was hugely difficult to make the decision! However we decided to offer the prize to the following exceptional graduates:
• Mary Somerville, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art
• Florrie James, Glasgow School of Art
• Ian Wilson, Edinburgh College of Art.
Ian Wilson said “Now that I have been awarded the prize I can’t wait to start working on an even larger scale!"

We are really looking forward to welcoming these new artists to our buildings in Hanson Street, Glasgow, Patriothall, Edinburgh and Meadow Mill in Dundee. You will get the opportunity to meet these artists and see their work at Wasps Artists’ Open Studios Weekend 2010 which takes place on the 2nd and 3rd October.
This prize is sponsored by property company PPG.

Anna Löbner Düsseldorf Exchange 2010 – Artists Announced

This is an exciting exchange which, since its conception in 2003 has strengthened the creative links between Glasgow and Düsseldorf.
Artist Ciara Philips will take up residency in Düsseldorf over the months of August and September. She will have a combined studio and apartment in the Bilk area of the city where many other artists live and will be given the opportunity to exhibit her work in the Kunstraum (a city run gallery space) towards the end of her stay.
Through her work, Ciara incoporates elements of painting, printmaking, drawing, sewing and knitting and plays with linguistic structures and visual codes manipulating them to suggest alternate meanings/readings.

Meanwhile, Sebastian Wickeroth, a sculptor and installation artist will be coming to Glasgow to live and work in our Hanson Street studio building and said he is “very much looking forward to becoming part of this strong artistic connection between the two cities”.
Sebastion creates installations on an architectural scale which deal with the deconstruction and disruption of geometric forms. He works with wood and plaster and bright ly coloured gloss paint to create space which look like they are being built yet pulled apart at the same time.
We are certain that both artists will have a fantastic experience in each city. You will be able to see Sebastian’s work as part of Wasps Artists’ Open Studios Weekend which takes place on the 2nd and 3rd October 2010.

New Studio Development in Kirkcudbright

There is a very active artistic community throughout Dumfries and Galloway which is evident through the success of events such as Spring Fling. Wasps Artists’ Studios has therefore been looking to set up studios within the region for the past 8 years to meet the high demand for studios there and to extend our network’s geographic spread. We were drawn to Kirkcudbright in particular because of its reputation as an ‘Artists Town’, one of several themed towns in Dumfries & Galloway (along with Wigtown Book Town and Castle Douglas Food Town). It is home to interesting historical buildings (including the Tolbooth art centre and 16th century remains of MacLellan’s Castle right in the centre of town) and the local landscape has long attracted artists – in the early 20th century many distinguished artists lived in the town: E.A. Hornel (whose former home is now a National Trust property); Jessie M. King and her husband, E.A. Taylor; and Charles Oppenheimer. It was also the summer haunt of visiting artists, such as S.J. Peploe, the Scottish Colourist, and Robert Burns, Head of Painting at Edinburgh College of Art. Several contemporary artists live and work in the town today and there are also some great local galleries. We therefore jumped at the chance to purchase two former town houses, Claverhouse and Cannonwalls, from Dumfries and Galloway Council when they came on to the market in Kirkcudbright back in 2007.
The project has now started on site at Claverhouse and Canonwalls on the High Street and work is anticipated for completion at the end of July 2010. Wasps are delighted to be developing within Dumfries & Galloway and this linked townhouse development will provide between 14 - 17 artist studio spaces at affordable rents as well as communal kitchen and toilet facilities.
In the meantime, we would like to invite artists that may be interested in renting studio space in Kirkcudbright to get in touch with us. At present we do not have precise details of sizes or prices of the spaces but we would have this information ready for you in advance of a viewing session which we would organize nearer the time of completion. If you would be interested in submitting an application for studio space in this exciting new development then please contact Helen Moore on 0141 553 5890 or email helenmoore@waspsstudios.org.uk.

£1 Million Award From Scottish Investment Fund

The Scottish Investment Fund is investing £1 million – the highest amount they can award – to help Wasps Artists' Studios grow across Scotland!
SIF is a £30 million investment pot provided by the Scottish Government to build capacity, capability and financial sustainability in the Third Sector.
Their £1 million award – a mixture of strategic investment, loan and risk capital – will help us to expand Wasps’ studio network across Scotland in the next 3 years, supporting hundreds more artists while becoming a 100% self-financing charity in the process.
Growth
We are planning to develop 6 more buildings across Scotland, creating 140 more studios, supporting 150+ more artists and doubling in size by 2012/13.
We have identified a number of target areas for development including: Glasgow; Kirkcudbright in Dumfries and Galloway; Dundee; Stirling; Highlands and Islands (with a preference for Inverness); and Irvine. These areas are demand hot spots and also represent gaps in our network.
SIF’s award will help us to create new buildings in 3 of these locations including: a £3.5 million project to transform a four storey building in Glasgow’s Merchant City into a ‘Cultural and Creative Industries Hub’; upgrading one of our existing buildings in Dundee and adding an entire new floor of studios; and developing studios in Stirling - though plans there are still at an early stage.
Expanding our remit
Through a number of our new projects, we will extend our service to providing workspace for other artforms such as dance, circus and theatre as well as the commercial creative industries sector. This step change will allow us to be financially sustainable and continue to keep rents low for artists.
The benefits
Through this growth, by 2012/13 we will support an estimated:
• 940 visual artists and makers • 26 arts charities and social enterprises • 34 creative industries companies • 799 jobs
We will own 12 of our 21 buildings and the percentage of income from non-public sources will rise from 88% to 98%.
Alastair Davis, Investment Director from Social Investment Scotland commented "we are delighted to be providing this level of finance through the Scottish Investment Fund. The Fund is all about creating a "step change" and this investment to assist Wasps with the next stage of their strategic growth, we are confident, will ensure this change will be delivered."
David Cook, Wasps’ Chief Executive, said “We are absolutely thrilled with this award. It will make a huge difference to the sustainability of our organisation. Ultimately, this will allow us to continue supporting more artists across Scotland, which is at the heart of everything we do.”

Merchant City Creative and Cultural Hub

The King Street South Block is a 4 storey 50,000 square foot Edwardian building in the heart of Glasgow’s Merchant City.
Wasps has provided two floors of studios for around 60 artists at the building for the past four years. It was originally only intended as decant space until the Briggait redevelopment was complete but we have managed to negotiate a long lease with Glasgow City Council to keep the building for creative use.
The council has wanted for some time to build a ‘Creative and Cultural Industries Hub’ in the Merchant City and had already identified this building as a potential site, once other arts organisations housed in the building were relocated into the city’s flagship Trongate 103 venue.
We are now fundraising to deliver the ambitious project which will provide:
• 102 workspaces (3,588 sqm / 38,620 sq.ft) in total for up to 112 visual artists, cultural social enterprises, and new and established commercial creative businesses • Dedicated meeting rooms, a social space & roof terrace • Stunning new ground floor foyer & multi-function space for exhibitions & events
With the varied blend of creative practices to be housed in the new building, we believe this hub can become one of the country’s most inspiring places for creative people to work; an environment where visual artists, social entrepreneurs and commercial business owners can develop their careers, grow their business, interact and collaborate.
We’ve already received confirmation of £950,000 from the Scottish Arts Council for the £3.5million redevelopment. If the rest of the money can be raised by April 2010 as planned, we aim to be on site in the summer and open the new facility in early 2011. Award-winning architects, NORD, have created a simple yet elegant design for the building which creates uniqueness in the identity of each floor - examples of some of these designs can be seen below:

Wasps/PPG New Graduate Prize 2009

Now in its third year, Wasps New Graduate Prize continues to support three exceptional graduates from Glasgow School of Art, Edinburgh College of Art and Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee. Last year, property development company PPG became sponsors of the prize and we are delighted that they have sponsored the initiative for 2009.

The aim of this award is to help the most promising artists in Scotland get access to studio space at an early stage in their career. We hope this will encourage these artists to continuing making work after graduating from Art School.

This year’s prize winners are:

Jamie Fitzpatrick, BA (Hons) Sculpture, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art
Francesca Nobilucci, MFA Sculpture, Edinburgh College of Art
Rachel Wright, BA (Hons) Painting, Glasgow School of Art

We are huge fans of all the prize winners' work and thrilled that with PPG’s support we can give them a real boost at the beginning of their career. It will be hugely interesting to see how their work develops over the coming year.

Francesca Nobilucci who collaborates with other craftspersons and makers to create her work said:

"I am delighted to receive this award. It means a lot to me and will be an excellent incentive at this stage of my practice."

Rachel Wright Said:

"I am really looking forward to start working on a much larger in my new studio. This is something that I would not be able to explore if I did not have studio space."

You can get the chance to meet these artists and view their work at Wasps Open Studios Weekend on the 3rd and 4th October.

Last year's recipients of the award were Jack Wrigley, Jo Sykes and Fraser Gray.

Wasps/Culture and Sport Glasgow: Dusseldorf Residency 2009 - Artists Announced

Our exciting exchange programme between Glasgow and Dusseldorf continues and this year installation artist Kirsten Kruger will be coming to live and work in our Hanson Street studios for the months of August and September 2009.

Kirsten Kruger says of her work:

“My Sculptures address images and atmospheres derived from the collective human basic vocabulary. The emotional aspect of sculpture and its immediate tangible quality as a bodily presence is used in order to evoke specific associations, opening new vistas for the observer’s imagination.”

Kirsten hopes that her stay in Glasgow will lead to a productive exchange with the resident artists and the public and is looking forward to opening her practice to new contacts and networks.

Congratulations also to Glasgow based artist Tian Miller who will take up residency in Dusseldorf at the same time. Tian will stay in a complex of artists live/work spaces in the “Bilk” district of the city – close to the centre. Her studio will be just above the Kunstraum which is where she will exhibit her work at the end of her stay.

Tian uses found materials such as printed fabrics, old wallpaper retrieved from derelict buildings, and garments passed on from relatives onto which she screen prints images of her own design. The effect created is an uneasy marriage of the two images contrasting the highly stylized, decorative, found patterned fabrics with appropriated technical scientific drawings and Victorian style silhouettes.

We, alongside Culture and Sport Glasgow who have supported this residency are certain that both artists will have a fantastic experience in each city.

Wasps/ Spring Fling Residency Collaboration

For the first time, Wasps Artists’ Studios and Spring Fling were able to collaborate on an exciting new residency project, inviting an artist based in Wasps studios to apply for a residency in Kirkcudbright that culminated in the presentation of a new piece of work for the Spring Fling event.

Now in its seventh year, Spring Fling is the most successful open studios event of its kind in Scotland and a major tourism event in Dumfries and Galloway, attracting around 8,000 visitors to the studios over the weekend. Spring Fling showcases the work of local artists and this year, nearly 80 artists opened their doors to the public over the bank holiday weekend of 23rd – 25th May.

The selected artist, Edinburgh-based Tim Taylor, saw off strong competition from over 30 other applicants from Wasps studios across Scotland. The residency took place in the proposed new Wasps studio buildings in Kirkcudbright town centre, where Taylor spent 10 days in the lead-up to and during Spring Fling exploring the natural and cultural heritage of the town and creating new work to be showcased in an ‘open studio’ environment during the 2009 Spring Fling event.

Please visit our Flickr site to see images of the works that Tim created throughout the Claverhouse building for the weekend. The residency was a massive success and hundreds of visitors to the Spring Fling event came to see Tim's work. We are certain that the work will make you smile.

A sculptor and installation artist who works with found objects and second-hand items, Taylor used the town’s artistic and maritime history as starting points. A visiting lecturer at Edinburgh College of Art, his work is characterised by an exploration of the beauty, pathos and humour inherent in the everyday and has previously been shown as far afield as Ekaterinburg, in Russia, and San Francisco, in the USA.

Tim was delighted to have been chosen as artist-in-residence at Kirkcudbright for Spring Fling 2009 and very much being a small part of Kirkcudbright's fine artistic heritage, begun some 120 years ago by the highly influential Glasgow School."

Spring Fling board member, Maggie Savage, said: “Tim's work was also symbolic of the opening of the new Wasps studios. The creation and installation of artwork created during a residency on the site of the new studios marks the beginning of a transition from unused buildings to creative spaces which will soon provide artists and makers with the opportunity to explore and produce new and exciting work of their own.”

This residency was supported by Dumfries and Galloway Council's Beacon Events Programme.

Developments at the Briggait, Glasgow

With partner charity The Wasps Trust, we recently started on site on the £6.3m redevelopment of Glasgow's former fish market. This first phase of redevelopment will create 69 workspaces for artists and cultural organisations, restore the historic fabric of this Grade A listed building and create a new public space on the riverfront with the grandeur of the 1873 market hall which will be restored to its former glory.
Before Redevelopment:

First Stages of Construction: All the ironwork is currently being painted white and the shop units that existed on the ground floor have been removed.

Parliamentary Event Supported by Davis Langdon

We held a fantastic evening reception at the Scottish Parliament on the 2nd December to announce our plans to expand the studio network across Scotland, supporting hundreds more visual artists whilst enabling Wasps to become fully self financing by 2012.

We have forged a groundbreaking £3 million partnership with the Scottish Arts Council to develop at least five new studio buildings in five communities in the next five years. The project, known as Five Cubed, will create 140 new studio spaces supporting up to 200 visual artists and makers each year. Our substantial waiting lists (currently over 400 artists) will be reduced by up to a half.

We aim to raise partnership funding to deliver the strategy and by the end of this five year period, the charity will have grown sufficiently in scale to be able to survive solely from its own resources, without any revenue support.

Wasps’ Chief Executive, David Cook, said: “We believe that Wasps is part of a movement that is leading the charitable sector right now in finding new ways to become sustainable - but more importantly we are delighted that this expansion of the studio network will support the careers of hundreds of artists across the country, making a tremendous contribution to the cultural life of Scotland.”

Donald Urquhart, one of the most significant artists working in Scotland today said: “Not only do the arts have a positive effect on Scotland’s communities, but the growth of the creative industries brings important economic benefits to the country. Greater investment in artists’ studios will support artists’ jobs and also the wider flourishing of Scottish contemporary art.”

Property and construction consultants, Davis Langdon kindly sponsored the event and are the project managers on the £6.3 million redevelopment of the historic Briggait, the most ambitious project undertaken by Wasps to date.

Paul Sweeney, a partner with Davis Langdon, said: "We are delighted to be involved with this exciting development for Wasps and to help create a vibrant workplace for artists. The creative arts make a massive contribution to the Scottish economy and this is expected to grow in the future. The far sighted decision by Wasps to aim for financial independence can only increase confidence within the artistic community."

He added: "As project managers we have seen the huge difference art and artists can make to public buildings. We need to encourage as many young talented artists as possible to continue producing great work to be enjoyed by the Scottish public. Wasps can help that happen."

Wasps Artists at Royal Scottish Academy

Each year the Royal Scottish Academy elects a number of artists and architects as new members. Nominated by the existing membership of the Academy, this prestigious invitation recognises their contribution to the arts in Scotland and looks forward to calling on their knowledge and experience in helping to nurture and promote contemporary visual art in Scotland.

This year, three Wasps tenants were elected as academicians - Michael Agnew, Aberdeen, Delia Baillie, Dundee and Donald Urquhart, Edinburgh.

Donald Urquhart is recognised as one of the leading Scottish artists of his generation whose profound and thought-provoking work has been shown both nationally and internationally. Originally from rural Perthshire, Urquhart studied Drawing & Painting at Edinburgh College of Art where he now lectures. His strong interest in the perceptions of one’s environment has resulted in an artistic practice which involves working with architectural space and permanent outdoor installations in addition to his principal media of drawing, painting and installation. He was one of the creative team responsible for AN TURAS on Tiree, the built artwork that has received international recognition. He was also responsible for all aspects of the design of THE SANCTUARY, the award winning spiritual space at the new Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh

Michael Agnew is a painter and printmaker, who often uses iconography in his work and is strongly influenced by Dada. Having studied Printmaking at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen, where he now lectures, Michael then went on to study for an MA at the Royal College of Art in London. He was awarded the RSA John Kinross Scholarship in 1990 and has regularly exhibited at the RSA Annual Exhibitions. He has exhibited works at both the Thackeray Gallery in London, and Rendezvous Gallery in Aberdeen.

Delia Baillie is originally from Glasgow but is now based in Dundee, having studied Drawing & Painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art. She received the RSA John Kinross Scholarship in 1999 and the RSA Alastair Salvesen Scholarship in 2003; which she used to travel between Las Vegas and Mount Rainier in Washington State, producing a body of work which explores the natural patterning of the landscape and the artificial patterning of everyday human existence in an area facing the ever-present threat of nature’s volcanic forces. Delia’s current work is preoccupied with lists, sequencing and orderliness and how nonsensical they seem when compared with the inner-workings of the human minds that create them.

There will be an exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy to mark the new appointments from 26th September - 26th October 2008. For further information please visit www.royalscottishacademy.org.

Culture Minister visits Glasgow Icon

Culture Minister, Linda Fabiani MSP visited The Briggait on Glasgow's riverfront this week, to review our plans for this much loved Glasgow building.

This Grade-A former Victorian fishmarket, constructed between 1873 and 1914, sits in Glasgow's medieval heart, beside the city's first river crossing (which gave both the building and the street it sits on their names, "Briggait" being short for "Bridgegate").

Described as the "best surviving collection of market halls" in the UK, Historic Scotland also calls it a "Glasgow Icon". The building surrounds the 17th century Merchants' Steeple, a fixture on the Glasgow skyline.

Following 8 years of planning, design and fundraising, we are delighted that the first phase of development at the building will begin on site in the next month.

This £6.3m first phase is fully funded with support from Glasgow City Council, the Scottish Arts Council Lottery Fund, Scottish Enterprise Glasgow, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic Scotland, The Mickel Fund, the Hugh Fraser Foundation and loan finance from Triodos Bank.

A contract has been completed with Morris and Spottiswood as contractors.

The building will provide artists' studios, office space for cultural tenants, retail/office spaces for creative industries, a café and two exhibition/display spaces. Crucially, it will create a new public space on the riverfront, within the grandeur of the 1873 market hall, which will be restored to its former glory.

The building has had a chequered recent past. In the 1970s it was scheduled for demolition but plans were halted on the back of a vociferous public campaign.

A trust was formed which ultimately led to the development of the building for shopping and leisure in the mid 1980s. Unfortunately, the centre failed to find its place in the city's retail network and the shopping centre closed before the turn of the decade.

Since then the building has had a number of temporary uses but will now be re-born as one of the largest cultural facilities in Scotland.

This is one of the main elements of a wider strategy to support the cultural sector and the creative industries in the Merchant City.

A second phase is in development and will be announced later this year.

Wasps New Graduate Prize Sponsored by PPG

To celebrate Wasps' 30th Anniversary in 2007, Wasps piloted a New Graduate Prize, awarding a free studio for one year to three exceptional artists from Glasgow School of Art, Edinburgh College of Art and Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee. The initiative was such a success we decided to make it an annual award and in 2008, property development company PPG became sponsors of the prize.

This year’s prize winners are:

Fraser Gray, 22, BA (Hons) Fine Art , Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art
Joanne Sykes, 23, BA (Hons) Tapestry, Edinburgh College of Art
Jack W. M. Wrigley, 24, BA (Hons) Sculpture & Environmental Art, Glasgow School of Art

We are huge fans of their work and thrilled that with PPG’s support we can give them a real boost at the beginning of their career.

Jack Wrigley who works in multiple media including musical instrument design and build, composition, photography, holography and puppetry, said:

"Being given a studio for a year will greatly aid my artistic practice, and help to further my work over the coming year."

Joanne Sykes said:

"One Wasps’ studio, a lot of red pencils, a very gnarly girl, some ideas....... imagine the chaos!"

You can get the chance to meet these young artists and view their work at Wasps Open Studios Weekend on the 4th and 5th October.

The first recipients of the award were Tom Sanders, Catherine Sargeant and Lynne Marie Szpak.

New City Centre arts space in Aberdeen

We have formed an exciting new partnership with Project Slogan (http://www.projectslogan.com/) and Gray's School of Art (http://www.graysartschool.co.uk/) that will give up to 12 emerging artists, including MFA and undergraduate students, the chance to create and show new work within our city centre project space in Langstane Place. By working together we are trying to create a more vibrant arts scene in Aberdeen and encourage artists to stay in the city once they graduate.

Our project partners, Project Slogan (www.projectslogan.com), support emerging contemporary artists in the city through exhibitions, projects and events. Project Slogan will lead on the curatorial aspect and offer mentoring support and advice for all the artists working in the project space.

Our thanks go to Aberdeen City Council and Gray's for part-funding this initiative. We will bring you more updates as the project develops.

The Briggait Reborn

With funding earmarked from Glasgow City Council, Scottish Arts Council Capital Lottery Fund, Scottish Enterprise Glasgow, Historic Scotland and the Heritage Lottery Fund, we are even closer to delivering the £7 million project which will bring this iconic building back to life as a new arts venue.

The Grade A Briggait's Courtyard with its balconies and elaborate cast iron glass roof formed the main trading floor for Glasgow's fish trade. Indoor lanes ran north and south to allow the horse-drawn carts to enter, unload and load while the walls were glazed white to provide the best hygienic standards. In 1977 the building fell out of use as the fish market moved to an out-of-town site.

The building was given a new lease of life as a shopping centre in the 1980s but this was short-lived as the centre struggled to attract visitors to this run down part of town. The Briggait lay predominantly empty throughout the 1990s until Wasps Studios moved in temporarily for a number of months in 2000. Glasgow Sculpture Studios then relocated to the building temporarily in 2003.

The proposed redevelopment will transform the three large halls of the former fish market into a new arts venue supporting an estimated 100 visual artists, creating 156 jobs and kick-starting the regeneration of this neglected part of the Merchant City. For the first time in years, the building's historic 1873 Courtyard will be open to the public on a daily basis.

If all the funding can be secured, we aim to start on site in autumn 2008 and complete the renovation in late 2009.

The project is being led by The Wasps Trust in partnership with Wasps Artists' Studios and Glasgow City Council. It's a key part of Glasgow City Council's 'Housing the Visual Arts Strategy' which, along with the nearby 'Trongate 103' redevelopment, will house 11 visual arts organisations and create a thriving arts quarter in the Merchant City.

Quotes

David Cook, Secretary of The Wasps Trust said

"We're delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund is able to support the transformation of the building into a world-class arts facility. The Briggait is an architectural gem, much loved by Glaswegians, and this award will mean we can now take forward our redevelopment plans to bring the building back into the public domain".

Ben Twist, Chair of the Scottish Arts Council Capital Committee and Council member commented

'The Scottish Arts Council is delighted to support this ambitious and exciting project. We are committed to supporting artists and arts organisation to fulfil their creative and business potential. This building will provide quality affordable studio spaces where artists can let their creativity flourish. In addition the creative design of the building will offer the public an opportunity to engage with the day to day work of professional artists.

The close proximity of this building to the Trongate 103 development and the new Glasgow City Halls - which have both also received Scottish Arts Council Lottery Funding support - will contribute to an exciting and vibrant arts quarter which is far greater than the sum of its parts. We congratulate the local partners for their vision in pursuing these projects.'

In response the Scottish Art Council's award, Councillor for the Merchant City, Gordon Matheson, also commented that:

'This is excellent news, and is another step towards the full regeneration of Glasgow's Merchant City. Glasgow's profile as a world-leader in contemporary art and a city keen to facilitate the work of artists can only be heightened by the development of this component of the Merchant City's visual arts quarter.
Launch of the Steeple, Newburgh

The Project

The Wasps Trust in partnership with Wasps Artists' Studios and FAC (Fife Arts Co-operative) has recently completed the redevelopment of 'The Steeple' in Newburgh, Fife. This stunning new studio and events complex, the first of its kind in Fife, was designed by architects Nicoll Russell Studios and features:

6 affordable studios for visual artists
A flat and studio for visiting artists
A project / community room for classes, workshops, performances and exhibitions

Background

The former Town Hall, Town House and Corn Exchange is a prominent historical landmark in the centre of Newburgh's High Street. The Town Hall had ceased operation in the late 1970s and had, except for very occasional use, been empty for the next two decades. When Fife Council put the Town Hall on the market in 2001, there was impassioned local debate about the future of the building and, in particular, concerns were raised about it falling into the hands of private developers.

The founding member of the FAC, John Strachan, who lives in Newburgh then approached Wasps' proposing that we buy and redevelop the building into a new arts facility for local artists and the wider population of Fife. Familiar with our work, John believed that a Wasps / FAC partnership could deliver a new arts building in Newburgh, while retaining the Town Hall as an important community resource.

Wasps had in the past looked at buildings in Achtermuchty, Cupar and St. Andrews to meet the needs of artists working in the area. However, these investigations - as is often the way with property projects - came to nothing. The Newburgh proposition, however, met all our conditions for developing new studios: there was clear artist demand; growing community demand for a new facility; very strong support from Fife Council; and their agreement to sell the property for less than its market value (with Scottish Executive approval).

Impact of the project

Newburgh is an old fishing village on the banks of the River Tay but, despite its picturesque setting, in 1997 Fife Council and the Scottish Executive identified Newburgh as one of Fife's most needy rural areas. Since 2001 the town has been the focus of considerable regeneration and now boasts a range of community initiatives, including the Newburgh Orchard Project and the Waterfront Regeneration Group.

The development of The Steeple has played a major part in Newburgh's energetic renaissance. In anticipation of The Steeple opening, a new commercial gallery 'The Sun Gallery' and retail business, the Twist Fibre Craft Studio, moved into formerly empty shop units on the High Street. An artist awarded a year long residency by FAC in 2007 has also since relocated to Newburgh permanently with her partner. She has purchased a former church and plans to redevelop it into another cultural venue.

Fife Council has estimated that The Steeple will bring an increase in spend in the local economy by up to £66,000 each year.

With 7 professional artists already working in the building and a diverse programme of exhibitions and workshops scheduled, we know The Steeple will go on to have a major impact on both the economic and cultural life of Newburgh.

Cost and Funding

The cost of redeveloping The Steeple was £430,000. This project was made possible with the generous support of Fife Council, Scottish Enterprise Fife, the Scottish Arts Council Capital Lottery Fund, Heritage Lottery Fund, Fife Environment Trust, East Fife LEADER+, the Community Environmental Renewal Scheme and loan finance from Triodos Bank.

Partnership

The Wasps Trust and partner charity Wasps Artists' Studios specialise in buying, redeveloping and providing affordable studios for artists in Scotland. The Wasps Trust has assets of £3 million and now owns 6 properties for 300 artists. Wasps Artists' Studios manages 16 properties across Scotland for some 750 artists each year. For more info please click here

Fife Arts Co-operative began life as a group of local artists, makers and designers who came together in 2001 to carry out arts activities in North East Fife. The group constituted in 2002 as a company limited by guarantee with charity status to develop, manage and programme the new The Steeple's project room. For more info please visit www.steeplearts.co.uk

We firmly believe this project represents a new way of bringing amenities to rural areas through an innovative partnership between the local and national. Through the Fife Arts Co-operative, the project is very much driven by local artists for the local community, with the support, expertise and experience of a national organisation, Wasps Artists' Studios.

Eagle house takes flight

The Wasps Trust has just completed the purchase of Eagle House, in Aberdeen's Shore Lane, securing the future of 10 artists' working spaces.

The building was bought by Ken Irons in 1999 and leased to a specially-formed charity known as NEAPS who in turn leased to individual artists.

In order to ensure that the studios were able to continue into the longer term, Ken has now sold the building at a favourable price to Wasps.

Ken explains "I was keen that the studios continue both personally and knowing my late wife Jean's commitment to developing artists post graduation. The ability to bring the work of NEAPS into the progressive Wasps organisation will ensure a continuity and opportunity to the present members and importantly to future members"

The current studio holders will now lease from Wasps, but in future this purchase guarantees more studios for artists in the city.

The NEAPS charity is being wound up and its reserves will be passed to Wasps to invest back into improving the studios. We expect installing a heating system will be high on the list of priorities!

This purchase - the 7th building bought by the Wasps Trust - adds to our Langstane Place studios bought and developed in 2005 (add link?)

Once again we are working with Triodos Bank, the ethical lender, to bring this project to fruition.

We think that a growing number of artists will stay in Aberdeen in the future. But the city's continuing economic success means that properties for artists to use are hard to secure, so this purchase is a very welcome boost to the studio provision in the city.

"Artists' town" gets artists' studios

Wasps has just secured an agreement with Dumfries and Galloway Council to buy two surplus council offices in Kirkcudbright.

The two buildings - called Cannonwalls and Claverhouse - originally constructed as townhouses, sit in the town's historic High Street, close to the Tolbooth Arts Centre and near neighbour to the Selkirk Arms Hotel where Robert Burns reputedly wrote his famous "Selkirk grace":

Some hae meat, and canna eat,
And some wad eat that want it;
But we hae meat and we can eat,
And sae the Lord be thankit.

Kirkcudbright is what the Rough Guide to Scotland calls the "most beguiling of town centres, a charming medley of simple brick cottages with medieval pends, Georgian villas and Victorian town houses, many attractively painted". It is known locally as "The Artists' Town", aiming to capitalise on its history as an artists' colony.

In the early 20th century, the artist Jessie M King brought many artists down from Glasgow including Edward Hornel and the 'Glasgow Boys' attracted by the landscape and natural light.

The area's natural beauty is still a draw for creative people and many artists and makers live and work in the countryside right across the region. Dumfries and Galloway Council's "Spring Fling" (www.springfling.co.uk) open studios event has become a huge success in recent years, bringing thousands of visitors each year to trail across the region visiting individual artists' workspaces.

Our recent research shows that 39 artists and makers are actively looking for working space in the region, and 19 of these are in the Stewartry area, in and around Kirkcudbright.

We hope that by creating a focus for a group of artists - the building could accommodate up to 17 artists' studios - we will help attract more people to come and live and work in the area.

When the purchase is complete we will explore the potential for creating visiting artists accommodation within the building, to help build on the area's links nationally and internationally.

This is the first of the collection of projects as part of Wasps' "Five Cubed" programme, a unique strategic partnership with Scottish Arts Council. SAC funding will be augmented by loan finance and we expect to have artists in the building working by the end of next year.

Celebrating 30 Years With new graduate Prize

Wasps has supported literally thousands of artists throughout the last 30 years, including some of Scotland's best loved artists. What better way to celebrate its 30th anniversary than by nurturing the most promising artists at the beginning of their career.

Due to the high demand, artists have great difficulty getting a studio after graduation. Wasps' New Graduate Prize will therefore award a free studio for a year to three exceptional graduates in Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

This year, we are thrilled to be able to offer a studio to new graduates, Tim Sander, Lynnmarie Spzak and Catherine Sargeant. They are all taking part in Wasps Artists Open Studios Weekend on 6th and 7th October (please click on their names to find out more about each artist).

A big thank you to Duncan of Jordonstone College of Art, Glasgow School of Art and Edinburgh College of Art for helping us launch this prize.

The Wasps Trust is delighted to announce the completion of The Steeple, a stunning new venue for the arts in Newburgh, housing 6 affordable studios for artists, a residency flat and studio for visiting artists, and a project room for art classes, workshops, performances and exhibitions.

The Wasps Trust and Wasps Artists' Studios have developed this new complex, the first of its kind in Fife, in partnership with local arts charity, Fife Arts Co-operative.

Formerly Newburgh's town hall, town house and corn market, the building has been renovated by award-winning architects, Nicoll Russell Studios, at a cost of £430,000. The project has been made possible with support from Fife Council, Scottish Enterprise Fife, the Scottish Arts Council Capital Lottery Fund, Heritage Lottery Fund, Fife Environment Trust, East Fife LEADER+ 2000-2006 Programme, the Community Environmental Renewal Scheme and loan finance from Triodos Bank.

Please visit www.steeplearts.co.uk for a run down of classes and courses that will be taking place over the coming months.

David Cook, Wasps' Chief Executive said:

"We are absolutely thrilled to have completed this development in Newburgh. It is a landmark project which will bring real benefits to the local arts community and to people living in North Fife. Thanks to all the funders for their enthusiasm and support in making this project happen."

Councillor Tony Martin, Chair of Fife Council's Environment and Transportation Committee said:

"Fife recognises the contribution that artists who live and work in our communities make to the overall social and economic development of our towns and villages and it's great to see a regeneration project that Fife Council has supported coming to life. Wasps has a proven track record in the development and delivery of this type of initiative. This has regenerated the former Town Hall and Corn Exchange, complimenting the other physical and community regeneration initiatives in the town."

Glasgow International 2008

From 11th - 27th April (10am - 5pm) artist Roger Palmer will be showing his work Caledonia/Canal Zones at our Hanson Street project space as part of Glasgow international 2008.

Caledonia recalls a 17th Century expedition to establish a Scottish trading colony in Central America. The voyagers planned to create a lucrative trade route linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. But the project ended in failure, with considerable loss of life and financial hardship for those who invested in the scheme.

Between November 2004 and June 2006, Roger Palmer carried herbs and spices between Scotland and the Caribbean. Powdered achiote, beetroot, caramel, cloves, mint, paprika, parsley and turmeric were used to stencil the word CALEDONIA on beaches in Colombia, Cuba, Jamaica, Panama, Scotland and USA. Several of these temporary interventions were executed at sites close to where Scottish ships were lost. In Caledonia, 32 photographs that document these interventions are projected as a continuously dissolving sequence of images, accompanied by a soundtrack made on the coastal border between Scotland and England.

In Canal Zones (gelatine silver prints, 2005-2008), Palmer observes evidence of contemporary maritime trade as container ships pass through the Panama and Suez canals.

Roger Palmer lives and works in Glasgow. He is Professor of Fine Art in the School of Fine Art, History of Art & Cultural Studies at the University of Leeds. Further information on Roger Palmer's work can be found at www.rogerpalmer.info

The Briggait, Glasgow

The Briggait is the city's historic fish market dating back to 1873. One of the city's architectural gems, it's a hugely popular building with Glaswegians attracting a high number of visitors on the rare occasions it is opened to the public.

The Briggait was redeveloped briefly as a shopping centre in the 1980s but lay predominantly empty throughout the 1990s until Wasps Studios moved in temporarily in 2000. Glasgow Sculpture Studios then relocated to the building in 2003 in anticipation of its redevelopment.

The Wasps Trust is working in partnership with Wasps Artists' Studios and Glasgow Sculpture Studios to transform the Briggait into one of the UK's largest arts production and exhibition venues. More than 6,800 square meters of floor space will be created housing:

World-class studios and a large-scale sculpture workshop for 250 artists each year

A magnificent events space for international exhibitions

City centre galleries to show the work of locally and nationally known artists

An education suite for workshops, talks and seminars

IT facilities, Meetings space, library and equipment hire for users of the building

Artists' training and mentoring schemes, international residencies and artist led events

A cafe overlooking the River Clyde and spilling out into the internal Courtyard

Workspace for creative businesses to cross-subsidise the arts activities in the building

To date £6 million has been raised from Glasgow City Council, Scottish Arts Council Capital Lottery Fund, Scottish Enterprise Glasgow, Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic Scotland and loan finance.

If all the remaining funding can be secured, redevelopment will start on site in early 2008 and complete in mid 2009.

Award-winning architects Nicoll Russell Studios have created impressive designs for the project (see above).

Scottish Arts Council £3m Investment

Wasps Artists' Studios and the Scottish Arts Council have formed a groundbreaking new partnership which will transform Wasps into one of the largest social enterprises in the arts while creating new studio spaces for hundreds of artists.

In March 2006, SAC advised that it would no longer provide revenue funding to Wasps from April 2007. This funding has been a small but essential part of our overall income, helping to meet central costs and to keep rents charged to artists as low as possible. We were therefore very concerned that rents would need to increase to make good this shortfall.

However, following extensive discussions with SAC National Lottery, we have negotiated a £3 million investment package to enable Wasps to become a fully self-reliant charity in the coming years, while dramatically expanding the network across Scotland and ensuring studios for artists remain affordable.

£2.5 million of the capital funding has been earmarked towards 53 ('Five Cubed'), a new strategy aiming to develop 5 new studio buildings in 5 communities in 5 years.

An additional £520,000 has been awarded to restructure the finances of Wasps and to add new staff to help us deliver the new studio projects.

We will raise a further £2.5m pounds from other public and private sector sources to buy and develop these buildings, bringing the total injection into the visual arts to £5.5m pounds.

The strategy will bring major benefits to the Scottish visual arts community. More than 140 new studio spaces will be created supporting up to 200 visual artists and makers each year. Wasps' substantial waiting lists (currently over 400 artists) will be reduced by up to a half.

The locations for these new studios - both urban and rural - will be agreed by Wasps and the Scottish Arts Council in the coming months, and selected projects will be delivered in partnership with local authorities.

By the end of this five year period, Wasps will have grown sufficiently in scale to be able to survive solely from its own resources, without any arts council revenue support.

Wasps' Chief Executive, David Cook said:

"2007 is Wasps' 30th Anniversary year and we couldn't have wished for a better birthday present. The Scottish Arts Council's investment is a major boost for Wasps and the visual arts in Scotland, enabling us to support hundreds more artists and makers across the country. Everyone connected with the organisation is very excited by this fantastic opportunity."

Ian Wall, Chair of Wasps Artists' Studios said:

"Wasps' board members are delighted with this news. Wasps has always worked hard to stand on its own feet financially and to date we have raised more than £11m of capital funding to buy and develop buildings for artists to work in so that we can ensure their use for decades to come. This investment will ensure that work can continue to support the richness of our communities in cities, towns and rural areas across Scotland."

Iain Munro, Head of Lottery, Scottish Arts Council said:

"We are excited about this new investment which, over the course of five years, will help meet the high demand for artists' studio space while placing Wasps on a secure financial footing, independent of revenue support from the Scottish Arts Council. This will be a unique funding arrangement in the arts in Scotland and one which we will be monitoring closely."

Amanda Catto, Head of Visual Arts, Scottish Arts Council said:

"The provision of appropriate, affordable space for artists to develop their practice is essential to developing the visual arts and crafts and encouraging artists to stay or move to Scotland. These new spaces will allow Wasps to accommodate many more artists and also provide collective space where artists from a range of disciplines can support one another, share ideas and could potentially lead to some exciting collaborations. Such studios provide an excellent platform from which artists can develop their practice and build their own businesses as creative individuals."

Wasps Artists' Open Studios 2007

A big thank you to all the artists who took part and everyone who visited Wasps Artists' Open Studios Weekend in early October 2007. The event was a great success attracting around 4,500 visitors across Scotland. View the profiles of all the participating artists and examples of their work.

Highlights of the 2007 event include:

235 artists participating across 13 locations in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen, Irvine, Nairn, Selkirk and Paisley
4,576 visitors across Scotland over the weekend
Visitors come back - almost half said that they had been to the open weekend previously.
£37,172 was generated in sales and commissions - an increase on last year.
88% of artists said that the event was great for helping to build stronger studio communities.

Since it began in 2002, the open studios weekend has grown into a key national arts event in Scotland. It has attracted over 20,500 visits in total - pretty impressive when you consider the studios are open for just two days each year! Almost £250,000 has been generated in sales and commissions, with all the money earned going directly into artists' pockets.

The event will be taking place again this year on the 4th and 5th October so please watch this space for more details!
