Shetland

The Location

The Shetland Islands are the most northerly part of the United Kingdom, some 150 miles north of the Scottish mainland. 15 inhabited islands are home to 24,000 people. The Shetlands have an ancient history, a stunning landscape, close links with Scandinavia and a unique culture with a long tradition of music and traditional craft making in particular. Shetland is reached by ferry or by air to Sumburgh Airport. Scalloway - the ancient capital of Shetland is located on the west of the Shetland mainland. It is a very picturesque village with a population of 1,000 people but it is also a working village with a large pier area used by fishing boats and other vessels. Scalloway has a bus service to Lerwick - Shetland's main town - but to enjoy the islands it is preferable to be able to drive.
