Participating in Open Studios Weekend 09

Directions

Our building at Langstane Place houses 32 studios over 3 floors and currently supports 40 artists.

After many difficult years of trying to secure permanent workspaces for artists in the city, we were able to buy and redevelop the building in 2004/05 with funding from the Scottish Arts Council Capital Lottery Fund, Aberdeen City Council and Scottish Enterprise Grampian, creating the city's first purpose-built studio complex.

The building also has a street-front project space which is currently being programmed by arts collective Project Slogan for 2008/09. This is part of a three-way collaboration between Wasps, Gray's School of Art and Project Slogan. Find out more about this project space.

Wasps Open Studios Weekend 2009:

Over the weekend artist Malcolm McKie has created  a couple of interactive experiments for the public.

The first experiment is a Gherkin lamp. The lamp is connected to the mains through a foot operated switch which when operated heats up the liquid in the gherkin. The liquid then changes to a gas which starts to glow. It’s all due to the sodium and pickling process that the gherkin goes through.

Malcolm will also be bringing out the “Reflect -A- Scope” which was very popular last year.  It’s very difficult but a lot of fun. Come along to find out what it is!

Directions

Wasps Studios on Langstane place is in a City Centre location, right next to Union St and about 5 mins walk from Aberdeen train station.

Accessibility

Visitors with disabilities would be able to access the ground floor studios easily. However, studios located on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floor have no lift access and visitors with mobility impairments would require assistance.
