material re-use

CASE STUDY: Briggait Clydeside Market Halls Development – Material re-use

Monthly progress meetings and site waste management reports from Clark Contracts show 100% of materials were diverted from landfill and sent on for sorting / recycling.

Briggait based artists were invited onto the construction site to gather materials to be used in their own:

  • Artists Salli Hughes and Margaret Archbold collected material from The Briggait construction site, bringing together elements of material to be used in their artwork and as part of an exhibition at The Briggait.
  • Briggait Arts Tutor, Kayleigh McGuinness, used some of the reclaimed glazed bricks from the 1904 market hall as part of The Briggait’s 150th anniversary exhibition. These glazed bricks were then returned to site to be reused in the renovation.

embodied carbon

CASE STUDY: Inverness Creative Academy – Embodied Carbon

Winners of the HIAAA 2022 ‘New life for existing buildings’ award
with partner architects LDN for projects involving refurbishment, conservation or extension of existing buildings.

The Inverness Royal Academy was purpose built in 1895 and the original buildings are Category B listed and of considerable architectural, social and cultural significance.

In 2018 Wasps Studios acquired the former academy and commissioned a design team, led by LDN, to transform the buildings to provide artists’ studios, workspaces for creative industries, individuals and cultural social enterprises, as well as publicly accessible meeting, events, exhibition, café, and workshop space. Completed in February 2022, it is now the largest sustainable creative arts facility and community resource of its type in the Highlands.

operational energy

CASE STUDY: Renewables – Operational Energy

We have switched to new electricity tariffs that include the provision of 100% renewable electricity generated by our supplier’s own UK hydro plans and wind farms.

Under the market-based method of reporting, Wasps can claim net zero emissions from Scope 2 by using a 100% renewable tariff. However, in keeping with best-practice guidance from the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, we will continue to report ‘location-based’ emissions (based on UK grid intensity / calculated using the UK national grid emission factor) alongside the market-based method and work to reduce our energy consumption at source.
