Richard Goldsworthy’s practice is all about transforming and combining different materials and developing new processes to create intriguing sculptural forms and drawings. At the moment he is focusing on wood and pewter. Although a lengthy process, he always sources green wood as he want’s to know its provenance and influence how the wood reacts during its drying process. Then by carving, sanding and burning, he adds strident contrasts to expose, highlight and celebrate its natural features and so-called imperfections. As he says “it is a delicate balance between my input and allowing the materials to find their own voice, to make their own mark”.

An accident in 2017 shifted his thoughts to exploring the fusion of different materials. Seeing x-rays of his spine supported by metal rods and screws – inserted to ensure a full recovery from a broken back – was intriguing, personal, and inspirational. Setting metal into the wood is a development of this. It has the potential to create a friction between two polar opposites yet, aesthetically, it appears harmonious as a single object. He feels this juxtaposition and alchemical fusion enhances and transforms the natural beauty of both the wood and the pewter. His aim is to create intriguing sculptural forms which showcase these resources in a new light.

In Autumn 2019 he had the idea of taking his sculptural pieces and using them to make their own footprints. Although it wasn’t until the summer of 2021, when he moved his studio to Marchmont Creative Spaces, that he had the environment to be able to explore this idea. Increasingly, he has been developing novel kinetic processes which permit the individual handmade character of his sculpture to freely flow between dimensions – from 3D to 2D space. Manipulating these processes enables him to create prints sharing common DNA and retaining unique character. No two will ever be completely alike.

This exhibition brings together and showcases all these elements of his artistic practice.
