Wasps and the Briggait are delighted to present 'BIDWELT (IMAGE-WORLD)', a solo exhibition from Callum Monteith.
Callum Monteith’s practice interweaves notions of nature, philosophy and aesthetics, with particular interest in how we construct our ideas of self through fictions of alternative places or imagined landscapes; and how this contrasts with our objective perception of our quotidian experiences and habitats. Monteith seeks to examine the correlation between these varying realities—the imagined and physical—and how they exist in an autonomous field of perception, whereby the constitutive elements are relatable and internally significant, in that they seek their meaning from one another.
The paintings aim to crystallise natural forms; creating flat, abstract compositions of darkly toned plant life that interprets the carnal essence of nature, whereby they take the form of a subjective state that gathers up and concentrates the visible. This total visibility alludes to how ‘things become things’, exploring the very notion of perception itself and how this relates to imaginal space, whereby an inner-self or conceptual-self can be aligned existentially through our unconscious and imagination.
The photography and print-based work is presented through both two-dimensional and three-dimensional displays, with the material originating from unique photography and found imagery/objects; with this then being processed through both digital and analogue mechanisms. Pictures of brutalist architecture, roadsides, urban scenes and domestic items seek to examine the intersections between natural and urban spaces; presenting a particular interest in how the very ordinariness of quotidian phenomena feeds into our stream of consciousness and helps us to construct a sense-of-self or being-in-the-world.
Exhibition Dates: 13th - 28th April 2019
