'Sound morsels and smoke drifts through neon and sky;
set back from that blurred life and its cellular air,
is the bar world, dark soul-holes, the modern plague lairs
where the stalk eyed sniff lines through quick powder stare
and booze children laugh as one culture of volume.
Orange light marks the floor through squares of stained glass
and religious, pale, soft, nudges time through the room.'
Monument – Rick Holland
Partly, It began with a photograph; an image of Gerrit Rietvelds’ hand cusping a small card maquette, A model for the Sonsbeek Sculpture Pavilion. Its curled paper edges are vast, a monumental space made of concrete cards. We see diagram both so slight and speaking volumes as it rests un-easy in the hand. When built, the pavilion will be accompanied by sculptures, and they will character and frame it. Soothing the ethereal breezeblock walls and making them real with their presence.
This photograph is a moment where architecture is a dream and its walls are endless, its true scale is impossible and limitless like tools and that will eventually build it.
