Wasps and the Briggait are delighted to present 'LOOK UP', a sight specific work from Anna Vlassova
Exhibition Opening: Friday 6th December, 6-8pm
Exhibition Continues: 7th - 13th December
“When first walking into the Sunken Space I noticed its height, craning my neck to look up at the large wooden windows, light pouring through. The space has a balcony and glass staircase opposite, which then leads down to where I stood, viewing platforms allowing the space to be seen from all angles by passersby.
“It is a sort of glorified corridor, where passersby look but not always stop. It can be seen as transitional, somewhere to pass through before or after an event, this interests me.
“Acting on this thought, I decided I wanted to make something centred around the idea of looking through rather than only looking at the work. I spent time in the space observing; When I look, what do I notice? the stone wall, the wooden ceiling, the metal bannisters, the glass stairs, the shapes that the existing architectural features create and the viewing angles they frame. I used these observations to guide the shapes, colours and materials used in the sculptural objects I created for the space.
“Telescopes and mirrors are instruments we use to look through; they both have the same function but what they show differs. Looking through a telescope shows us what is on the other side of it; it frames a view with its circular shape. Looking through a mirror shows us ourselves, reflecting back the room, and those of us occupying it.”
This exhibition invites the viewer to look and re-look. The sculptures being a playground for the eyes, constantly switching from one tool to the other. Looking at people re-looking, being the observer whilst being observed.
