Wasps is very pleased to be taking part in this year’s Doors Open Days Festival at our buildings in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness. 🗝️🚪

The team at Inverness Creative Academy (1st pic) are hosting tours on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 September. Visit what is the former site of Inverness Royal Academy from 1895 until 1980, which was officially reopened in 2022 by Wasps as the first cultural and artistic hub for the Highlands. The building now provides upwards of 60 workspaces to the artists and makers of the region. The old Assembly Hall and Gym Hall rooms have been transformed into new events spaces, hosting exhibitions, symposiums, screenings, markets and even ceilidhs.

The Briggait's (2nd pic) doors are open on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September. Formerly Glasgow’s fish market of over a century – The Briggait is made up of a series of soaring market halls that date from 1873, 1899 and 1904 respectively. Today, the building serves as the Wasps' headquarters, and offers upwards of 150 cultural producers workspaces. In 2023, Wasps Studios began the redevelopment of the remaining market halls at The Briggait, to bring the entire building back into public use for the first time in nearly 50 years. Working alongside Clark Contracts, the charity is restoring these historic sites to provide more space for creativity, more markets, more places to meet and more things to do, for the people of Glasgow and visitors to the city.

The team at Granton Station (3rd pic) in Edinburgh are looking forward to seeing you on Saturday 28 September. Officially opened in February 1903 as a transport link for the workers of the Granton Gasworks, Granton Station is a £4.75m project led by Edinburgh City Council who acquired it in 2018, to restore and adapt the B-listed Granton Station. The vision for Granton Station is as a hub for Creative Industries, where creatives can come to work, and expand their network by fostering a creative community with other likeminded individuals.

Are you an artist? Do you have a connection to the Midmills building, now Inverness Creative Academy? Did you study here when it was a secondary school? Do you have a recollection of the building to share?

In celebration of Inverness Creative Academy's fifth anniversary, Wasps is looking for artworks in any medium that honour the historic significance of the building and the fantastic community of creatives that's been established here in the last five years. Selected works will be showcased in an exhibition this October–November in the building's stunning restored Assembly Hall.

Formally the site of Inverness Royal Academy from 1895 until 1980, Wasps transformed the derelict school into the first arts hub for the Highlands, offering creative workspace to the artists and makers based across the region. Inverness Creative Academy now boasts a packed events calendar and provides workspaces to 100 cultural producers.

The deadline to apply and submit work is Friday 13 September, 5pm.

Open now in Inverness, Glasgow-based Rowena Comrie's latest solo exhibition 'BEYOND FOREVER' offers an encounter with the oppositional ideas of otherworldliness and functionality painted in harmony.

"Many of these paintings relate to Lake Michigan, Chicago. As a visitor to the unimaginably vast expanse of fresh water that is Lake Michigan, I was left with an indelible memory of the strange, almost alien force encompassed by and contained within. An unbroken horizon wider than the field of vision, contradicts the idea of a lake. The lack of tides and the fresh water defy the notion of a Sea. Like all bodies of water, its colours are defined by the weather, but Lake Michigan has its own innumerably subtle shades that as a painter, I’m challenged to produce in my work. The ‘cribs’, historic buildings dotting the lake are further mysteries that on investigation turn out to be water intakes, surrounding and protecting, collecting and supplying fresh water to the City of Chicago and its suburbs – 9 million people – water that is pumped through tunnels built in the 1900s beneath the lake, an awe inspiring engineering feat. Circular and oval tunnels located 200 feet beneath the lake, up to 20 feet in diameter, carry water from the cribs to onshore pumping stations and purification plants." – Rowena Comrie

In Edinburgh this weekend, don't miss the chance to explore the studios of the multi-faceted artists at Patriothall, as they open their doors to you this Saturday and Sunday, 11am–5pm.

Visit their current group exhibition on the ground floor (pictured) before wandering further into the building to visit the painters, tapestry makers, photographers, print makers and sculptors that call Patriothall their creative home. Chat with renowned craftspeople and maybe even purchase something to support their practice.
