Yvonne Weighand Lyle

  • Visual Arts

My practice includes painting, public art and installation. I am making work related to specific working class communities in Edinburgh and Midlothian, places I call home. Within these places of home, I am both an artist and a member of the community. It is very important for me that my work is embedded within the community and I have a socially engaged and inclusive creative placemaking practice.

I am especially interested in post extractive landscape and my ongoing research includes my own lived experience alongside research into wider community culture. My work is very strongly connected to geology and astronomy specific to place. Themes I explore in my work are concerned with commemoration and invisibility.

Amongst those participating in the Wasps Winter Ma Amongst those participating in the Wasps Winter Market at The Briggait this year is a number of our very talented tenants. 🌟🌟🌟 You’ll be sure to find a unique gift to treasure, made by an artist based at one of our buildings. Just a few are:

🦊 Silvie Cristofoli is an emerging artist – based out of Hanson Street – working primarily in ceramic art. Her work is recognisable by hand painted, black and white illustrations, applied on uniquely shaped clay bodies. Folklore, belief systems, old traditions, as well as the natural world are the main influences that are reflected in her work.

🌸 Cressa McLaren is a Briggait-based glass artist working mainly in kiln formed glass. She makes a range of distinctive designs including tableware, lighting and a collection of work 'Glass Meadow' as well as one-off commission pieces. Her work is inspired by a deep love for flowers, colour and contrast, and also offers a playful interpretation of the stylised retro designs of the 1950s.

✍️ Frank Boyle is an artist-illustrator based out of The Briggait. Between 1999 and 2015 Frank drew a daily cartoon called ‘Boyling Point’ in the Edinburgh Evening News. He won Cartoonist of the Year in 2003 and 2006. He has produced political cartoons for Labour Weekly, Tribune, New Statesman and many trade union journals. As of lately, Frank has been making his ‘Café People’ series of illustrations – candid, quick drawings of those sitting in coffee shops around Glasgow city centre.

Stop by The Briggait on Saturday 2 (10am–5pm) and Sunday 3 (10am–4pm) December for the Wasps Winter Market to support the local artisans and purchase from them this festive season.

We’re delighted to be welcoming so many new stal We’re delighted to be welcoming so many new stall holders to our Wasps Winter Market at The Briggait on the first weekend of December. Don’t miss the opportunity to shop from this curated list of 90 makers and artists, including:

🧳 POCA Bags is a Scotland-based brand making bike packing bags and cycling related lifestyle accessories. Born from a desire for durable gear that meets the demands of every adventure, each handmade bag is designed and sewn in Scotland. Michael Woods started POCA from a humble kitchen table using a sewing machine from the 70s. Found outdoors in many forms - from gravel and off-road ultra cycling, to mountaineering – Michael understands exactly what your adventure gear needs to be capable of.

💍 Wild Nora Jewellery is designed and handmade in Glasgow by Leah - the one-woman team who designs and hand makes each piece. Founded in 2016, Wild Nora uses traditional silversmithing techniques as well as the lost wax casting technique and a chemical free process, with an eye on creating forever jewellery with timeless appeal. Since the start, Wild Nora has used recycled sterling silver and gold to produce affordable, ethical jewellery that is beautifully designed and well made.

🤠 Kieron Redmond is a graphic designer based in Glasgow. He makes posters, prints, illustrations and logos for clients all over Europe. The work he sells is inspired by the places he’s lived (Glasgow, London, Belgium and Kenya), cycling, mid-century design, matchbook art, cinema and more.

Opening at South Block this Friday 1 December: ‘ Opening at South Block this Friday 1 December: ‘Small Frame, Infinite Canvas’ by Tim Murray-Browne 🏞️

Digital artist and coder Tim Murray-Browne reworks AI through glitch, coding, mysticism and personal memory in an exhibition of new work. ‘Small Frame, Infinite Canvas’ offers an alternative perspective on generative AI through creative coding, glitch and personal memories.

From the artist: ‘Our relationship with AI is still fluid. In my mind, it jostles for contradictory roles: a tool, a collaborator, a pathological copycat, a new kind of mind – sometimes all these at once. The technology is racing ahead faster than my intuitions can.’

Stop by for the opening night this Fri 1 Dec, 6pm–9:30pm or see the show Mon–Fri, 9am–5pm until Fri 22 Dec. Note: gallery is closed 16 & 17 Dec.

At our Winter Markets, we are proud to host a wide At our Winter Markets, we are proud to host a wide array of our wonderful tenants at the stalls. From their creative spaces at Wasps’ buildings, they have handcrafted beautiful items for you to browse and buy this festive season at Inverness Creative Academy.

🌻 Ceri White – based at Perth Creative Exchange – produces high quality, contemporary earthenware ceramics for the home. Her work consists mostly of individually wheel-thrown vessels decorated in her unique and colourful style. She is inspired not only by the minutiae of nature she loves as an adult, but the objects which fed her soul and sparked interest as a child living in the 1970s when she was surrounded by contemporary and post-war home décor and domestic objects. Ceri’s aim is to create lasting, high-quality, but playful pieces which have meaning and inspire some of that joy.

⛰️ Gael Hillyard is a visual artist and writer based at Inverness Creative Academy. Themes such as light, space, and buildings feature in her work due to much of her childhood spent exploring the many oddly shaped rooms of a studio rich with stucco, faded wallpaper, and large dusty windows. Her paintings are mostly oil and acrylic and sometimes include collage and found objects, such as old paper, metal, glass, dried plant materials, and even the occasional insect.

🖌️ Martin Irish is an internationally acclaimed abstract painter with a studio at Inverness Creative Academy. He creates vibrant yet moody paintings, captivating viewers with bold strokes and an unmistakable passionate energy. With a strong focus on abstraction and the play of light and shadow, his captivating compositions unravel within the viewer, creating an immersive sense of awe.

Visit the Wasps Winter Market at Inverness Creative Academy on Fri 24 (4pm–8pm), Sat 25 and Sun 26 Nov (10am–4pm). Click the link in our bio for more information on the event.
