Jane Gardiner is obsessed with movement and constructs images through considered layers while letting earlier marks, pentimenti and the grain of the surface breathe through. Her oil paintings and etchings explore swimmers, birds and shifting coastlines, using gesture, light and atmosphere to hold the tension between movement and stillness. What comes next is an ongoing question.
She graduated from Glasgow University Medical School in 1998 and has developed her artistic practice alongside her career as a GP partner. She first exhibited at the PAI and RGI annual shows in 2009 and has continued to show regularly in open exhibitions across the UK, including selected group and solo shows. She has a growing body of paintings and prints held in private and public collections, including Glasgow University – a stone’s throw from where she lives, although she is commonly found by the sea-side.
Recent recognition includes selection for major national exhibitions and a forthcoming show at Pitlochry in June.
