Vigil is an exhibition of large-scale work in charcoal by Janice Deary.

The vigil is a universal phenomenon: in times of uncertainty, people gather together to keep watch, to pray, to bear witness. To hold up a light in defiance of the darkness. This body of work meditates on the vigil as a response to the uncertainties of life in today’s world, the unknowns of life in general.

Charcoal is a challenging medium: simple and stark, yet capable of great expressive depths. Prehistoric, accessible, sustainable. Perfect for large-scale work, and for exploring themes of light and dark.

Originally from South Africa, Janice Deary now lives in Scotland and has a studio in Newburgh (Wasps, The Steeple). After pursuing her academic interests in Philosophy, Janice decided to turn to Fine Art, achieving an MFA from the University of Dundee in 2020.

You are invited to the preview event at Patriothall Gallery on Saturday 8 April, 4pm-6pm.
