From hand carved porcelain to sculptural seaweed, From hand carved porcelain to sculptural seaweed, Newburgh artists will inspire you at their Studio Open Day this November.

For a day full of creativity, pop along to The Steeple at 67 High Street (10am–4pm) on Saturday 22 November. In addition to seven open studios, makers will be showing and discussing their unique and original creations with special demonstrations by artist/blacksmith Jim Shears and seaweed paper-maker, Cally Nurse. Free parking, free entry, wheelchair access and home-baking.

Seven resident artists are hosting open studios, including two new faces – Caryll Tyson and Sarah Morton. Weavers, blacksmiths, potters and painters are amongst those participating.

Open studios are a great opportunity for anyone interested in art making to meet local artists to find out what they are inspired by, and what the creative process looks like.

The burgeoning group of artists at Granton Station The burgeoning group of artists at Granton Station in Edinburgh now includes Nadia Djavanshir, who joined the building in June of this year. We asked her about what being an artist at Granton Station has been like so far.

From Nadia: 'I am a painter and ceramicist based in Edinburgh. My work is nostalgic and explores memory as relayed in family stories that link me to my Pakistani heritage. I use techniques found in traditional islamic art, specifically Indo-Persian Miniature painting, and adapt it to make contemporary work. Natural pigments connect me to the environment and play a pivotal role in my art.

Having the space to create freely has been transformative and allows me to be more experimental. It’s a privilege to have a studio where I can be free to leave work out and make a mess. The light and space are wonderful as is meeting other residents in the building. Being an artist can be quite isolating and it feels good to be part of a community, both at Granton Station and as part of the Wasps network as a whole.'

Thank you to Nadia for sharing, and for being a part of the thriving collective at Granton Station.

There are a small number of artist spaces currently available at Granton Station, which you can find out more about by clicking the link in our bio, or email our Lettings team on mailto:lettings@waspsstudios.org.uk to enquire.

Visit The Briggait on Wed 12 November (5pm–7pm) Visit The Briggait on Wed 12 November (5pm–7pm) for the new solo exhibition by visual artist Sooun Kim, who is the recipient of the 2024 RSA x Wasps Award. He is currently represented by Patricia Fleming Gallery.

'Mimae: the edge of sleep' explores an actuality of abstraction across layered realities, exposing aftershocks of sensation and dissonant emotion through metaphorical and physical planes.

“Mimae” is a Korean term created by the artist, implying the residual sensation between sleep and wakefulness, the lingering of emotion, and the overlapping of alternate layers of reality. These sensations are presented as a response to invisible dissonances such as the failure of emotional attunement, linguistic delay, and temporal gaps of the body that the artist experiences as a Korean immigrant. The “edge” is where the strata of these sensations unfold, and is not a boundary but an aftershock, transcending through metaphorical and physical planes. It is another secondary modality of reality, and ontologically, it is reality.

Sooun Kim's work was selected by Wasps' Arts Programme Manager as the award's recipient for its grand scale and intricate detail. The work that formed part of the RSA exhibition was a stand out, and will be well received in our Briggait gallery spaces.

The show will be open Monday–Friday (9am–5pm) until 3 December.

Images of works:
1. 'Fray Perch', resin and taxidermied crow (2025)
2. 'Ante Meridiem', oil and charcoal on canvas (2024)

Visit Patriothall Gallery next month (8–16 Nov, Visit Patriothall Gallery next month (8–16 Nov, 11am–4pm daily) for Gerry McGowan's showcase of work spanning decades, created in his Patriothall studio since he joined the building's artist community in 1991.

From the artist: 'A retrospective? Yes! A studio sale? Yes! Lots of framed/unframed work? Yes! A bit chaotic? Probably! Retirement? Probably not!

An exhibition of mostly, but not exclusively, figurative paintings covering a very long period. Paintings of people and their various activities. I paint ordinary people doing ordinary things. Other visual diversions.'

Gerry McGowan is a painter based at Patriothall in Stockbridge, Edinburgh. He was most recently selected as a finalist for the Scottish Landscape Awards 2025.
