Catherine Sargeant is a visual artist based in Edinburgh who uses text or asemic writing in her artworks. Creating works in paint, print and collage along with altering books. She combines materials and techniques depending on the subject and/or the materials available.
Finding words have an inherent beauty & is fascinated by the way we are saturated with text & communication in every aspect of our lives. Catherine aims to take this & create works that will simultaneously calm & question the viewer. Her text works have a certain amount of ambiguity allowing the viewer to add to the story.
She spends time in a rustic fishermans cottage in Wester Ross which is the starting point for many of her artworks, seen here painting the ‘jubilee series’.
Graduated as a mature student from Edinburgh College of Art during its Centenary year in 2007, Catherine became the first recipient of WASPS new graduate award.
Catherine frequently works in series, layering both printing and painting techniques.
